In recent weeks, we have experienced a far greater than normal number of pedestrian robberies in East Atlanta. While the total number so far this year is at seventeen, seven of those have been in August and the first two weeks of September. It started this month when a landscaping crew was robbed of some of their equipment. When they challenged the thieves, a gun was pulled out. More recently, a pair of drivers were robbed when blocked by a vehicle between 11 and midnight. One incident was on the Cecile/Jobeth loop, and the other near Maynard Terrace and Van Epps. Just this morning around 12:30, another robbery on Gresham occurred. Please do not hesitate to report any people or vehicles that seem to be lurking where they don't belong. It's better to have APD check it out and find that their is no threat, than to miss a potentially dangerous situation.
As is often the case, September and October bring a lot of crime to soft targets. Along with robberies, elevated levels of car break-ins and thefts of A/C and heat pump units are occurring. APD is really dependent on us to be their eyes in the community, so report suspicious activity by calling 911 as soon as you see anything that doesn't look right.
It appears that the two robberies of people in their cars was part of a larger robbery spree. APD is hopeful that the group of juveniles will all be arrested. It is likely that the perpetrators are known, but it's taking time to build a case that would tie them to robberies and potentially the aggravated assault of the man who was robbed and carjacked. The first victim on Jobeth was not harmed nor was her car taken.
If you see a white male and white female in their 20s hanging around the Village or Brownwood Park that seem out of place or suspicious in any way, please call 911. If they were on foot when they committed the robbery on Gresham this morning, they are likely still in the vicinity.
We have posted a number of weeks of detailed crime reports. Due to manpower shortages at APD, fulltime crime analysts at individual zones are a thing of the past. That seems to be the reason why crime reports we receive are often out of date and coming to us on a sporadic basis.
There was a report of an officer not knowing the boundaries near Stokeswood south of Ormewood. That issue is being addressed with the individual officer. There is no reason that 911 should not know the boundaries either based on the information available to them. APD will also be examining their GPS data to verify that these areas near the city limits are being adequately patrolled.
More license plate readers are coming to Zone 6. While some are concerned about the privacy implications of these devices, they are good for recovering stolen vehicles and property, and even preventing burglaries that some of these vehicles are used for.
There will be a joint police meeting with Zone 3 and Zone 6 on Wednesday the 21st across from the Zone 6 precinct. We'll post the details for anyone wishing to go and ask questions of the police. Major Peek should be in attendance to represent Zone 6.
