Hopefully everyone had a pleasant celebration of the dawning of 2016. From our perspective, crime was not a major topic in 2015, but there were still periods of time where it crept into our daily conversation. As the years go by, let's hope that those conversations become less and less frequent. We really appreciate the community's support in making this service possible and adding to the safety of East Atlanta. Let's also remember to thank our police officers, who do risk their lives each day to keep us safe, particularly the ones that are working the extra hours to staff the EASP.
With so of us many traveling this year, particularly by car due to the cheap gas prices, the EASP received an overwhelming number of out of town requests during November and December. Be sure to alert us whenever you are traveling, not just during the holiday season. This is a members-only perk to provide your out of town information to both the EASP officers and to APD. If you would like to take advantage of this service, as well as supporting more patrols for East Atlanta and your street, we are allowing new memberships through Monday January 4th. After that, anyone joining the EASP will not have their membership in effect until April.
If you'd like to support the EASP by volunteering your time, there is a need for another person to answer phones during the day. There is no need for 100% availability, as several people answer calls at any given time. If you are able to answer the phone even 50% of the day, you are a good candidate to help out. Generally you shouldn't expect to answer more than a few calls per week. Keep in mind that we take calls from the entire community, not just members, and we are striving to answer all calls and texts regardless of the time of day. One new volunteer was just trained this week, but East Atlanta is an active community in reporting crime, and our biggest task is being accessible and offering assistance to you whenever it's needed.
