There has been a lot of information on social media in the past few days about Joshua Magnussen, who left some threatening notes over the weekend at the Flatiron and Midway here in the EAV. He was detained by the police today and is being held in the Dekalb County Jail for Terrorist Threats. When arrested, no weapons were in his possession. His situation is still uncertain, as the investigation continues. We will try to provide updates based on what APD and Homeland Security allow us to tell the public. However, the one thing everyone in our community should do is pick up the phone and call the EASP at 404-954-1568 for any public safety issue, including one of this nature. Yes, call 911 first, but be sure to call us after that. Our contact at Homeland Security was incredibly responsive and moved very quickly to locate Mr. Magnussen. At the time of our call, Zone 6 had not yet made Homeland Security aware of this situation, so we're glad to have contacted them directly. We'll also be exploring why there was a disconnect between Zone 6 and Homeland Security. This time no one has been harmed, but next time could be different. Hopefully some lessons can be learned to make sure that issues of this nature are escalated more quickly. There is no finger pointing required, and the best thing to come of this is that citizen awareness is our best weapon against any threat to our safety.
Last week produced some other significant arrests in our area. First, the EASP officer on duty on Thursday apprehended a man who had burglarized a business on Glenwood and a residence on Haas. Once again, an alert citizen called 911 to report the suspicious activity on Haas. It's not often an officer can catch someone with goods from two crimes at once, so two thumbs up for an excellent arrest.
A second event occurred on Friday, as three burglars were arrested in the vicinity of Greenleaf and Cloverdale. They had already committed multiple burglaries that day in other parts of Dekalb County. They appeared to be operating with multiple vehicles, which indicates a high probability that they're the same group that has been attempting to commit burglaries in our area in the past week or so. That activity was often being tied to a white Nissan Altima and either a black Mercedes SUV or a grey Jeep Commander. We were working closely with the Dekalb 360 Security Patrol as multiple reports of these vehicles came in for several days.
The latest detailed crime reports for East Atlanta have been posted for the week ending June 4th. No one type of crime has been prevalent of late, just a rather steady stream over the past few weeks.
Just a reminder that the next start date for EASP membership is approaching. Due to the holiday weekend, we'll keep the window open a few extra days until July 5th. After that, the next start date will be October 1st.
