On Thursday April 9th, there will be a Zone 3 and Zone 6 crime and safety community forum at the Zoo at 6:30 pm. With the large increase in armed robberies in Zone 6, and the sudden increase in burglaries in our area, we strongly urge people to ask tough questions of the police representatives. Police manpower in Zone 6 is down dramatically, and we need to know how the problem is going to be addressed. Captain McGee from Zone 6 will be in attendance.
The EASP is less than pleased that this forum is being held during Spring Break when so many residents will be unable to attend. For those unable to attend tomorrow night, APD has invited us to attend the first portion of the Virginia Highlands Community Association meeting on April 13th at 6:30 p.m. at Petway Hall, Church of Our Saviour; 1068 North Highland across from Fire Station 19. In attendance will be APD Assistant Chief Shawn Jones, Deputy Chief Joseph Spillane and Zone 6 Commander Timothy Peek.
The East Atlanta Community Association meets on Tuesday April 14th, but Major Peek and Captain McGee are not normally in attendance at the EACA meetings. We'll see if we can get either of them to come on Tuesday evening.
To counter much of this burglary activity, we are adding extra patrols in East Atlanta, and have added four new officers to reduce the workload for our existing officers and to cover the additional patrol hours. The extra patrol hours will be in effect at least until burglary activity declines. We do not believe that the increase in burglaries is tied to Spring Break, although homes are probably being targeted late at night this week due to residents being out of town. If you hear anyone knocking at your door late at night, make sure they are aware you are home, and call 911 immediately. Several burglaries have also occurred right after people have left home, so watch carefully for any suspicious people or vehicles as you drive away from your residence.
