Once again, the area around Braeburn Circle and Clifton has experienced another series of crimes. In this case, four incidents in the past couple of days are cause for major concern.
1. On Monday morning around 6:30, there was a residential robbery in the 1700 block of Rockland Drive near Hilburn. We’ve posted the report below.
2. On Monday evening, there was a burglary on Clifton near Braeburn Circle around 9:20 pm. This was caught on videotape, and the perpetrators seemed to be in no major hurry, most likely because there was no alarm going off.
3. On Tuesday evening around 7:30 pm, there was a burglary in the 1800 block of Braeburn Circle.
4. On Wednesday morning about 5:45, a burglary was attempted on Jobeth near Clifton. In attempting to open the resident's window, they set off the alarm. Like the incident Monday morning, the resident was at home sleeping.
We are urging all residents to call 911 and the EASP at 404-954-1568 (470-315-2360 for the Dekalb Patrol) if you see anything or anyone remotely suspicious. And if your alarm goes off and you’re home, call 911 immediately. If you have an alarm, use the Instant setting when you are at home, not Stay. Should someone enter through a door, Instant will cause the alarm to go off without delay.
These crimes were shared with Atlanta and Dekalb Police, but we obviously can’t guarantee their response. The EASP is trying to patrol as much as possible, but we need your support in order to patrol more during this challenging time. We are hoping the combination of the EASP and the new Dekalb Patrol will help, as our EASP officers can’t patrol the unincorporated Dekalb areas. We need support in both areas to start to put a dent in this pattern, which goes all the way back to July. It is not related to the summer or the holidays, and will continue past the holidays unless we do a better job watching out for our neighbors. The EASP is offering the rest of December free for new members so that we can put as many hours as possible into evening patrols.
This is not meant to ignore the problems in the rest of our area. Kirkwood has experienced a number of early morning burglaries, Grand Park and Ormewood Park had burglaries in the early morning this past weekend, while neighboring areas of unincorporated Dekalb continue to be plagued with burglaries. We all need to get to know our immediate neighbors and tell them when we’ll be away or out of town. It may seem like a nuisance to monitor the homes of your neighbors, but calling 911 before the crime is committed is a much better way to deal with these incidents than calling after the crime has already occurred.
On 12/09/2013 at approximately 0650 hours, I responded to 17XX Rockland Drive in reference to a home invasion robbery call. Upon my arrival, I met with victim #1 and victim #2, who stated they were robbed at gunpoint. Victim #1 was asleep on the couch in the living room and woke up to the suspect (black male 6' 2", 200lbs, wearing a black ski mask, white sweater with multi-color stripes, dark jeans and armed with a silver semi-auto handgun) standing in the kitchen pointing the gun at them. They stated the suspect said "give me all the money, where is the laptop don't move give me your wallet". They took their wallet out and attempted to hand it over to the suspect when the suspect said "take the money and the credit cards out". They took $40.00 and their credit card out of their wallet but the suspect only took the cash. The suspect then asked "who else is in the house" and they replied my roommate. The suspect said "show me" and they started walking towards the second victim’s bedroom followed by the suspect. The suspect then kicked in the second victim’s bedroom door and started questioning them about their money and laptop.
Victim #2 stated they were asleep in their bedroom when awakened by a loud unknown voice in the living room. They could hear the suspect asking victim #1 something and they called the police. While on the phone with 911 the suspect kicked in their bedroom door and started asking where was the money and the laptop. (I observed the broken door frame and what appears to be a shoe print on the door). The suspect took their HP laptop computer and multi-colored wallet containing Regents Bank debit card, Wells Fargo debit card and GA driver's license. The victims stated the suspect told them "don't' look at me and stay in the bedroom". They stated the suspect left the location in an unknown direction of travel. It was later determined the suspect gained entry into the home through the kitchen door by reaching his hand through the unlocked doggie door (attached to the kitchen door) and opened the dead bolt locks. The suspect also exited through the kitchen door because the front door was locked with the dead bolt. The victims stated they sometimes enter the home through the kitchen door by reaching through the doggie door the same way the suspect entered when they lock themselves out. Major Felony Detective Evans unit #993 was notified and responded to the scene. The victims were given a case number and informed how to handle this incident. The investigation was turned over to CID. No injuries were reported.
