Burglary Season Underway

9/3/2014

APD is reporting a burglary this morning off Dekalb Avenue a little south of Lake Claire.  Please be alert for a charcoal gray Dodge Durango occupied by four young black males.

Please take these alerts very seriously, as September and October are the worst months for burglaries in our area.  We've had a very low rate of burglaries and robberies in East Atlanta and the adjoining areas of Dekalb County in 2014, but that can change quickly.  If you aren't a member of the patrol, we are running a promotion that the month of September is free for new members.  Even a three month membership will help support extra patrols all the way through December.

The EASP allocates patrols based on the concentration of membership in your area, so more members on your street means more frequent patrols.  We would love to see far more participation on streets like Ora and McPherson that traditionally haven't had a lot of members.

Any idea why these are the worst months?

Probably due to the relatively mild weather along with the end of the summer. Burglaries are generally fairly low in the summer with so many more people at home, outside and coming and going from their residences. Even the period leading up to Christmas shows major crime to be at a far lower rate than in the late summer and early fall period. The EASP has really worked hard with Dekalb 360, other neighborhood patrols and both APD and DKPD to pass information quickly concerning crimes and stolen or suspicious vehicles. Once a crime is detected, the ability of someone to drive a block into another beat in Zone 6 or from Atanta into unincorporated Dekalb to commit additional crimes is vastly reduced.

For those who have been victims of a car break-in this summer, that isn't what most people would consider a major crime, but it can be very annoying especially if a window is broken in the process.
