In recent months, burglaries and robberies have been almost non-existent in East Atlanta. However, the past week continued a disturbing pattern of car thefts in Zone 6, many of which occurred in the SAND communities west of Moreland or in East Atanta. Here is a summary of last week's locations for Beat 612 in East Atlanta.
June 30 - 1300 block of Metropolitan
July 2 - 1600 block of Newton
July 4 - 1500 block of Glenwood
July 5 - 1400 block of May
July 5 - 1300 block of Newton
It appears that all thefts were late at night or early in the morning, except the most recent one on Newton, which occurred around 6 pm.
While some people like to keep their car doors unlocked to prevent broken windows, a better option is an empty, locked car with one or more anti-theft devices. That doesn't mean empty of valuables, but empty of all items, even food packaging. An empty folder, box of work items or a stack of papers may not seem valuable to you, but the thief may not know the value of something until they dig through it. And they may assume that you have other items out of sight that are worth stealing.
